I have 4 levels of “healthy” that I use to easily rate the health benefits of a recipe. These 4 levels helped me to reduce the stress I felt 12 years ago when I was first learning how to eat healthy. I still use them today. After all, who needs more stress in their life. I use these levels to not only simplify my life but to help me determine several things:
- Which recipes I will include in my personal Eating Healthy Recipe Notebook
- How a meal fits into my 80/20 Eating Healthy Goals
- Writing out my grocery list
- Ordering at a restaurant (post coming soon – be sure to watch for it in your inbox)
The 4 Levels of Healthy I use to easily rate the above are:
- Unhealthy: Contains zero healthy ingredients
- Somewhat Healthy: Contains less than 50 to 80 percent of healthy ingredients
- Mostly Healthy: Contains at least 80 percent healthy ingredients
- Healthiest: Contains 100 percent of healthy ingredients
Before I started my journey for eating healthy, I was somewhere between 1 and 2. Now I am between 3 and 4. That means that some days, as I look back over what I consumed that day some meals contained 80 percent healthy ingredients and some contained 100 percent healthy ingredients.
Unfortunately, when I first began down this path, I put myself under too much pressure to do everything 100 percent. If I had been critically ill, that would have been understandable. The problem with overdoing it is that stress can be a major contributor to different diseases. So while learning to eat healthy is a great thing, I soon decided it was better to take it one step at a time.
